  17. <p>     You can't get any more monumental than Mount Rushmore: Abe
  18. Lincoln's face alone is three times the height of his statue in
  19. Washington. In a gigantic party last week, 3,500 revelers
  20. attended the 50th anniversary of the sculpture's completion.
  21. George Bush presided over a formal dedication ceremony and the
  22. launch of a $40 million fund-raising drive to renovate the
  23. memorial.

  25. <p>     But not everyone was in a mood to celebrate.
  26. Environmentalists decry the busts as a desecration of nature.
  27. New Republic writer Alex Heard identified Gutzon Borglum,
  28. Rushmore's eccentric creator, as a member of the Ku Klux Klan.
  29. And the Sioux Indians charge that the memorial is sculpted from
  30. sacred land that was stolen by the government. In a gesture of
  31. reconciliation, the Ziolkowski family since 1948 has been
  32. carving an even grander likeness of Crazy Horse, the Sioux
  33. warrior, from a nearby mountain.
